Chess in Seoul and the capital area
Around Seoul, chess is mostly taught and played in a hagwon. Academy chains such as ICHESS and The Chess EPA run children's classes from Yongsan and Banpo to Songdo and Suwon, and several academies host numbered FIDE-rated tournaments. Adults find a game at meetups in the cafés and bars of Hongdae, Jamsil and Jung-gu, while gu and city federations play their cups in district halls, in Bundang and at the science museum in Gwacheon.

Chess960 around Seoul
Over-the-board Chess960 in the capital area has one organiser so far: the Thinkgrow Research Institute in Gimpo, which played a first Chess960 freestyle tournament in June 2026 and a second in July 2026. A title scan of the Korean events on chess-results.com found nothing else with 960, Fischer or freestyle in the name.
In Chess960 the back-rank pieces start from one of 960 shuffled set-ups, so memorised openings stop helping and the game starts at move one. Between Gimpo editions it can be played online at ch960.com.

How to read a card
The directory holds 84 cards, 84 of them still showing chess, read between and . They are drawn from the tournament server chess-results.com, a national chess directory of meetups and tournament venues, the academies' own branch maps, notice boards and blogs, Meetup and other group pages, district sports councils, and Korean place listings. Most quotations on the cards are in Korean.
Cards in a list run from the most recent dated trace to the oldest; the order is not a judgement of quality. A question no page answers is left as "not stated by sources". The status lines, the three source marks and the limits of the directory are explained under sources and method.
A meetup, an academy or a federation missing?
Many Seoul groups post their dates on Meetup, Somoim, Daangn or a Naver blog, and academies open new branches every season. If a card lags behind or a place is missing, a short note with a link to the page that shows it is all that is needed.
